Netflix’s ten-part British drama strands Canadian figure skater Kayla MacBentley in Sheffield after her twin Mac lands a spot with the Hammers, an all-conquering ice-hockey academy. While Mac rooms with cocky captain Bear Stelzer and goalie Sam, Kayla hunts for a new partner, clashing with Swedish skating scion Ava Hammarström and bonding with leukaemia survivor Sky Tyler, who also happens to be Mac’s off-limits crush. Parents Jenny and Luke juggle marriage, money and two teenagers who can’t share the spotlight on the same sheet of ice.
Creators Kirstie Falkous and John Regier insisted on performers who could actually skate; the entire young cast endured a nine-week boot camp at IceSheffield run by Team GB coach David Hartley. Stunt doubles landed the jumps, but every actor performed their own crossovers and puck work, shot during night sessions while elite skaters trained at dawn. Lime Pictures kept the running time tight, 26–34 minutes, letting sibling rivalry rather than subplots carry the momentum.
Released globally on 15 March 2021, the series was quietly cancelled by Netflix eight months later, leaving Kayla’s partnership and Mac’s championship hanging unresolved. The opening bars of Chvrches’ “The Mother We Share” still echo over an empty rink, a reminder that streaming graves fill fast when medals aren’t won.
