White Lines

A Manchester librarian travels to Ibiza to find her missing brother’s body and stays for the drugs, DJs and decades-old vendettas.

Starring Laura Haddock· Nuno Lopes· Marta Milans
Overview

Zoe Walker’s brother Axel was found under a Spanish almond orchard twenty years after vanishing from the island’s 90s rave scene. In the present, she abandons her husband and step-daughter to pick at scabs the police never touched, and each revelation pushes her deeper into the Calafat crime clan’s champagne-popping, ketamine-snorting playground. The plot ricochets between two timelines: Axel’s final summer as a cockney DJ spinning vinyl for the super-rich, and Zoe’s increasingly reckless hunt for the killer among the same champagne-sprayed villas and abandoned fincas.

Creator Álex Pina keeps the neon-strobed excess of Money Heist but swaps vaults for villa orgies, feeding Netflix’s algorithm a cocktail of sunburned noir and Balearic club beats. The dialogue flips between English and Spanish without subtitles on screen, trusting viewers to feel the menace when Nuno Lopes’s henchman Boxer growls “te estás metiendo en camisa de once varas” while polishing his knuckleduster. Tom Holkenborg’s score layers 303 squelches over spaghetti-western twang, so even a sunrise looks like a threat.

The ten-episode run was shot entirely on location, moving from Ibiza Town’s Dalt Vila cobbles to the salt flats of Formentera, then doubling a Mallorca quarry for the desert rave where Axel’s body was dumped. Netflix released the lot on 15 May 2020, cancelled in August, leaving the cliff-hanger of Zoe coked-up and blood-spattered on a cliff road as her last scene.
