Three Pines

Eight-part crime drama starring Alfred Molina as Quebec detective Armand Gamache, cancelled after one season on Prime Video.

Starring Alfred Molina· Rossif Sutherland· Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers
Overview

Alfred Molina leads as Chief Inspector Armand Gamache in this single-season adaptation of Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache novels. Set between the French- and English-speaking villages of Quebec, the eight episodes follow Gamache and his Sûtre du Québec team (Rossif Sutherland as Jean-Guy Beauvoir, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers as Isabelle Lacoste) as they investigate murders that crack the varnish of postcard-perfect Three Pines. Each case opens with a corpse, then widens into the town’s micro-polit of bistro owners, live-in poets, and Indigenous activists whose histories refuse to stay buried.

Tantoo Cardinal’s Bea Mayer and Clare Coulter’s foul-mo poem Ruth Zardo supply the texture of a place where everyone knows everything yet says nothing.Emilia di Girolamo’s scripts fold the central whodunit around a parallel arc of systemic corruption inside the Sâureté, using flashbacks to Gamache’s botched raid on a Mohawk blockade and the young Indigenous sisters still missing because of it. Tracey Deer, a Mohawk director from Kahnawake, consults and directs two episodes, grounding the script’s critique of colonial policing in the same landscape where the books are set.

Filming took place August–December 2021 across five Quebec townships, reusing existing general stores and curling clubs rather than stage builds to keep the budget on a streaming-weekly leash. All eight episodes were released between 2 and 23 December 2021; Amazon cancelled the series in February 2023, leaving Penny’s remaining seventeen novels, and Gamache’s unfinished reckoning, unfilmed.
