Four storeys of glowing pegs dominate the studio as Danny Dyer invites pairs of contestants to gamble their answers on the BBC’s pachinko-style behemoth. Each drop of a ball can add or subtract thousands; green builds the pot, red bleeds it dry. Angela Rippon’s calm voice reads the questions while the camera tracks the ricochets like a slow-motion horse race. The set itself travelled more than the players: first to a Polish warehouse, then to Wembley Arena after lockdown grounded foreign shoots.
The first round, “Free Fall”, fires three balls simultaneously as couples lock in A-or-B answers; miss one and the board turns crimson, wiping out the fledgling bank. Later rounds separate the pair, sealing one in an isolation booth while the other faces the choice between a guaranteed sum or whatever the final rebounds deliver. Series four upped the stakes with a golden “Doubler” button that can double a question’s haul and pushed the theoretical jackpot to just under £1 million.
Over 37 episodes the show proved that Saturday-night audiences still relish pure chance wrapped in neon and tension. Ideal Games released a plastic home version in 2020, letting living rooms recreate the clatter of fortune without the four-storey drop.
