The Royal World

MTV dumped ten self-declared aristocrats into a Surrey mansion and called it appointment viewing.

Overview

The Royal World arrived on 8 November 2018 as MTV International’s single-season social experiment: six hour-long episodes, one Surrey country house, and ten young people whose selling point was proximity to a crown. Host Archie Manners, a professional magician, introduced the cast as they moved in together for a summer of champagne receptions, horse-riding lessons and polite back-stabbing.

Lineage credentials varied wildly. Tyler Dooley brought cannabis entrepreneurship and the half-nephew connection to the then-new Duchess of Sussex; Camilla Beresford is the daughter of the Marquess of Waterport; adopted brothers Michael and Dimitri Campbell brandish the courtesy title Count from their mother’s short-lived marriage to the Duke of Argyll’s younger son. Others stretched the definition: Nigerian-born Niyi Olopade cited a distant relation to a tribal ruler; Jessica Heydel arrived claiming up to three British baronies; Zara Sassoon-Munns simply admitted she had grown up in luxury hotels.

Produced by Initial for Endemol Shine, the series followed the standard reality arc of themed challenges, black-tie blow-outs and confessionals heavy on “my people”. Ratings never justified renewal, so the house closed its doors on 12 December 2018, leaving the cast to resume their assorted claims to thrones that never quite existed.
