The Reluctant Landlord

Romesh Ranganathan inherits a Surrey pub he never wanted and tries to keep everyone happy while quietly plotting escape.

Starring Nick Helm· Romesh Ranganathan· Marek Larwood
Overview

Romesh Ranganathan plays a version of himself who inherits The Seven Swans, a tatty Surrey pub, after his father’s sudden death. His widowed mother insists running the place honours family duty; his wife Natasha (Sian Gibson) treats the bar as an extension of their living room, and deadbeat regular Lemon (Nick Helm) treats Romesh as a permanent soft-touch. Each half-hour episode charts Romesh’s fresh scheme to offload the business, sabotaged by sentiment, guilt and his own inability to say no.

Shot single-camera in a real Egham boozer, the first series landed on Sky One in late 2018 and pulled respectable numbers for the channel. A second run followed in autumn 2019, adding Nigel Havers as a suave rival landlord who nearly buys Romesh out before the deal collapses over a karaoke machine. A Christmas special wrapped the show on 23 December 2019, ending with Romesh still behind the pumps and no closer to freedom.
