The Imitation Game

Comedy impressionists battle through spoof film scenes, song parodies and revoiced news under Alexander Armstrong’s quizmaster eye.

Starring Ruth Wallace
Overview

Alexander Armstrong presides over a single seven-part run in which Britain’s sharpest impressionists turn current events and pop culture into competitive sketches. Rory Bremner and Debra Stephenson captain opposing teams that also include Luke Kempner and Jess Robinson, each episode pitting them against tasks like revoicing news footage, re-enacting famous film moments or dropping celebrity voices into unlikely duets.

The format, devised by Jon Naismith and Graeme Garden among others, dispenses with scores until the final reveal, leaving the studio audience to judge purely on immediate laughs. Donald Trump might serenade Adele, Boris Johnson could trade quips with Mary Berry, and a crisp 40-minute running time means the impressions arrive, sting and vanish before fatigue sets in.

Produced by Ruth Wallace for Big Talk and Random Entertainment, the series landed on ITV from 2 September to 28 December 2018, filling the post-News at Ten slot traditionally reserved for light topical fare. Ratings were modest, peaking around 2 million viewers, and no recommission followed, leaving the show a short-lived curio for impression-spotters rather than a breakout panel hit.
