The Couple Next Door

Suburban infidelity spirals into blackmail when yoga-teacher Becka and traffic-cop Danny entangle new neighbours Evie and Pete.

Starring Hugh Dennis· Eleanor Tomlinson· Alfred Enoch
Overview

Eleanor Tomlinson and Alfred Enoch play Evie and Pete Greenwood, a thirty-something couple who swap city clutter for a manicured cul-de-sac and immediate best-friend status with next-door alpha traffic officer Sam Heughan and his Insta-perfect wife Jessica De Gouw. One tipsy barbecue later, Evie and Danny wake up in the same bed, setting off a chain of cover-ups, text-message threats and voyeuristic CCTV that makes the picket fences feel like prison bars. Creator David Allison keeps the Dutch original’s six-episode spine but relocates the action to Leeds, letting the Yorkshire drizzle mirror the moral dampness.

Series two, starting July 2025, swaps the original quartet for Annabel Scholey’s heart-surgeon Charlotte and Sam Palladio’s anaesthetist Jacob, whose surgical composure is shredded when enigmatic locum Aggy K. Adams rents the house next door and starts scrubbing in on more than operations. Only Hugh Dennis’s curtain-twitching Alan Richardson survives the reset, giving Channel 4 its first returning suburban thriller since The Replacement.

Rotten Tomatoes settles on 38% “rotten” but 4.8/10 still translates into binge sessions: critics called it “nonsensical yet bingeable” (Telegraph) and “sexy rather than cringeworthy” (Guardian). Production shuttled between Leeds suburbs and Belgian sound stages to double for anonymous commuter belt anywhere, while composer Hannes de Maeyer threads club beats under kitchen-sink tension. The result is pulp you can hum along to.
