Noel Fielding plays the 18th-century highwayman as a vain, velvet-clad fop who inherits a gang he never asked for and a price on his head courtesy of Hugh Bonneville’s preening thief-taker Jonathan Wilde. The six-episode order, quietly bumped to seven in post-production, was shot among the turrets of Ludlow Castle and wrapped in March 2024, dumping all instalments at once on Apple TV+. Fielding, who doubled as co-writer and exec producer, stuffed the writers’ room with fellow Mighty Boosh alumni and That Mitchell and Webb scribes Richard Naylor and Jon Brittain, then drafted in Ben Palmer to direct the first trio of episodes and George Kane the remainder. The result is a psychedelic romp that swaps historical grit for glitter wigs, talking mushrooms and a dungeon rat called Geoffrey. Supporting misfits include Marc Wootton’s soft-hearted strongman Moose, Ellie White’s pickpocket Nell and Asim Chaudhry’s useless warlock Craig. Despite a July 2024 renewal announcement and reports that season two was 75 per cent shot, production stalled when Fielding failed to return to set and Apple quietly cancelled the lot. The soundtrack, a baroque-pop confection from Oli Julian and Nick Foster, outlived the show on streaming playlists.
