The Billion Dollar Chicken Shop

BBC cameras follow KFC staff, suppliers and customers across three episodes that reveal how 19 million chickens become fast food each year.

Starring Ralf Little· Beth Spiby
Overview

Ralf Little narrates three hour-long visits to KFC’s British empire: a branch in Greater Manchester where teenage crew member Beth Spiby balances minimum-wage shifts with auditions; a Lancashire farm where 30,000 birds reach slaughter weight in 35 days; and the company’s Woking test kitchen where chefs spend six months perfecting a new crispy coating. Cameras catch delivery drivers clocking 90-second loading targets, a quality-control inspector rejecting chips that fall below 7cm, and a marketing team betting the Christmas menu on a £3.99 “Festive Buckets” campaign that must shift two million units in four weeks.

The series, commissioned by Emma Willis for BBC One and produced by Wild Pictures, aired consecutively between 18 March and 1 April 2015, drawing consolidated audiences of 3.2–3.8 million. Filmmakers Stephen Finnigan and Damian O’Mahony secured access for nine months, yet KFC retained final cut, resulting in scenes of supplier abattoirs stopping at the kill line and no mention of the chain’s 2014 poultry scandal. The closing shot of episode three lingers on a discarded chicken bone turning to landfill, the only overt nod to criticism of the brand’s waste.

Critics praised the access but noted the absence of nutritional debate; The Times called it “a £900 million free advert wrapped in BBC neutrality,” while The Guardian compared its tone to a “cautiously optimistic staff induction video.” The series has never been repeated on the BBC or released commercially.
