Summerwater

Six-part Channel 4 drama adapted from Sarah Moss’s novel about a wet day at a Scottish cabin park that ends badly.

Starring Silvie Furneaux· Jamie Sives· Shauna Macdonald
Overview

The rain never lets up at a shabby loch-side cabin park where twelve holidaymakers eye each other across sodden grass. Inside their thin-walled chalets, Dougray Scott and Shirley Henderson play a long-married couple whose silences are louder than the downpour, while Valene Kane and Daniel Rigby’s Justine and Steve Tindall police their teenagers’ boredom with rising irritation. Lithuanian builder Marijonas (Arnas Fedaravičius) keeps practising his English on the wrong people, Polish nurse Alina (Anna Próchniak) clocks every micro-aggression, and teenage Becky (Silvie Furneaux) catalogues the adults’ failures in a notebook she hides under her mattress. Each hourly episode hands the perspective to a different resident, so the same barbecue, the same karaoke night, the same midnight argument on the jetty keeps shifting shape depending on who is telling it.

Writer John Donnelly and directors Robert McKillop and Fiona Walton shoot the six stories like a chain of dominoes, one small humiliation nudging the next until the final hour when the loch claims its due. Freedom Scripted filmed entirely on location around Loch Lomond through early 2025; the water never looks inviting, the cabins feel pre-cold-war, and the weather is practically another cast member. Channel 4 premiered the complete box-set on 16 November 2025 after the BBC had passed on the project, reportedly nervous that Scottish holiday parks are too niche for prime-time. Viewers disagreed: the first episode drew 3.2 million streams in forty-eight hours, making it the channel’s strongest drama launch since I Am Ruth.
