Russell Kane lands in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains with zero survival training, zero Arabic, and only a dying smartphone for company. Each week he repeats the stunt in a new hellscape—Norwegian snowfields, Costa Rican jungle, Italian Alps, Polish forests, a desert island—and each week he’s paired with a different YouTube personality whose practical skills are equally non-existent. Together they Google improvised shelters, translate pleas for water and attempt to bluff border guards, all while the battery icon blinks red.
The format, commissioned by BBC Three and BBC Worldwide, arrived in May 2016 as a deliberate antidote to macho survival shows. Instead of flint expertise, the series trades on comic panic and spotty 4G coverage, letting the audience watch minor internet celebrities discover that TripAdvisor can’t start a fire. Directors from Kalel Productions kept the crews minimal, forcing the pair to film confessionals on their own cracked screens.
Critics welcomed the gag. The Guardian preferred Kane’s whimpering connectivity to Bear Grylls’ controlled bravado, praising the entertainment value of watching urban narcissists realise GPS is useless without charge. Six episodes later, BBC Three quietly retired the experiment, leaving Kane alive, viral and still refusing to learn how to read a compass.
