Sky Sport Football

Italian pay-TV channel devoted to European club football, operated by Sky Italia from 2003 until 2023.

Overview

Sky Sport Football began life on 31 July 2003 as Sky Sport 3, the third channel in the newborn Sky Italia portfolio, arriving the month after the satellite platform itself. It carved out a niche showing live Serie A and Champions League fixtures that RAI and Mediaset could no longer guarantee wall-to-wall, plus nightly studio shows built around the league calendar. The channel’s visual grammar, tight two-camera pundit desks and on-screen tickers, became the Italian standard for football television.

On 2 July 2018 the station was renamed Sky Sport Football and folded into the premium Sky Calcio bouquet, shifting to slot 203 and adding HD simulcasting alongside streaming on Sky Go and Now. Rights cycles for the Europa League, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 were added, but the core remained Italy’s top flight, with every match of the season shown across the network’s dedicated feeds.

The channel closed on 3 July 2023 when Sky Italia condensed its sport portfolio from ten channels to six; live fixtures now migrate between Sky Sport Uno and the thematic Sky Calcio channels, while magazine programming was absorbed into the main Sky Sport 24 loop. The closure marked the end of twenty years in which Sky Sport Football had set the bar for Italian football coverage, from the first Milan derby in HD in 2006 to the remote-pandemic commentary crews of 2020.
