Sitting on a Fortune

Gary Lineker hosts a game where six players sit in a line and only the one in the golden front seat can answer.

Starring Gary Lineker· Chris Kamara· Sam Quek
Overview

Gary Lineker fronts this ITV1 studio game (7 November 2021–9 July 2023) in which six contestants are arranged on a straight line of coloured chairs. Only the occupant of the gold “Money Chair” may speak; a correct answer keeps them there, a miss sends them to the back and shunts everyone else forward.

Rounds pare the field from six to four to two, each time eliminating whoever lands in the red rear chair when the required number of right answers is hit. The two survivors and one of the earlier casualties return for a seven-question final where the jackpot ticks down £10,000 for every error; whoever grabs the last correct answer pockets whatever remains of the £100,000 pot.

Critics were unimpressed. Joel Golby in The Guardian dismissed Lineker as disengaged, while the Belfast Telegraph grouped him with fellow ex-footballers Ian Wright and Alex Scott as proof that pitch skills don’t equal hosting chops. ITV quietly cancelled the format in October 2023 after 13 hour-long episodes produced by Possessed and Potato at Dock10. The show never gave away the full six-figure prize.
