Safe

Eight-part British thriller set in a gated community where a missing teenager exposes neighbours' secrets.

Starring Michael C. Hall· Amy James-Kelly· Amanda Abbington
Overview

Michael C. Hall swaps Miami blood-spatter for a British accent as widowed surgeon Tom Delaney, whose teenage daughter Jenny vanishes after a house party in their picture-perfect gated estate. Each episode peels back another layer of the cul-de-sac's manicured lawns to reveal clandestine affairs, prescription-drug scams and a body count that climbs faster than the property prices. Created by Harlan Coben and written by Danny Brocklehurst, the eight-parter was Netflix's first UK-scripted commission shot like a French prestige drama, all cold blue palettes and rain-slick streets, yet kept the American author's trademark every-parent's-nightmare engine.

Amanda Abbington plays Tom's detective neighbour and girlfriend Sophie Mason, the officer officially barred from searching for Jenny yet unable to stop digging, while Marc Warren supplies brittle loyalty as Tom's oldest friend and medical partner. The supporting ensemble behaves like a WhatsApp group where everyone has muted the chat: teenagers lie, parents cheat, teachers seduce and the head of the residents' committee keeps a freezer full of secrets. Shot in Cheshire and Manchester, the series aired in its entirety on 10 May 2018 and was promptly devoured by binge viewers who dissected final-frame twists online within hours. Critics praised Hall's clipped, grief-stricken turn but winced at the plot's addiction to coincidence; viewers simply kept clicking next until the last secret spilled onto the kitchen floor.
