Nick Jr.'s British import sends a ginger tabby and her toy-box crew on 11-minute trips to the moon, under the sea or through jungles, all narrated by the cat's owner Lara. Joanna Page voices Poppy Cat in the first run; Jessica Ransom takes over for the second. Supporting voices include Joanna Ruiz's excitable Zuzu, Charlie Cameron's cautious Mo and Teresa Gallagher's boastful Owl.
The production history is as winding as the stories: optioned in 2004 by Zenith Entertainment and distributor Cake, the rights were absorbed by Coolabi in 2006, with King Rollo Films finally delivering the first 52 episodes in 2011. A further 52 followed in 2014, bringing the total to 104 and securing slots on Sprout in the US, ABC in Australia and over 140 other territories.
Lara Jones’s picture-book palette survives intact: bold blocks of colour, collage textures and characters stitched like soft toys. Each tale begins in Lara’s bedroom, shifts to full fantasy once Poppy’s red scarf is tied, and resolves back at the bedroom window, the cat nonchalantly licking a paw while Lara closes the book.
