Perfection

Nick Knowles quizzes contestants on general knowledge in this daytime BBC quiz where perfection earns cash.

Starring Nick Knowles
Overview

Nick Knowles presides over a brisk 45-minute quiz where a lone contestant faces four trivia specialists dubbed “the usual suspects.” Each round the player must answer every question correctly — achieve “perfection” — to stop money draining from a pot that starts at £1,000. Slip once and the suspects split the cash, but if the contender survives all three main rounds and nails the final four-in-a-row solo, they take the full balance home.

The format, devised by producer Liz Gaskell and her 12 Yard team, flipped the traditional quiz dynamic by making the panel the hunters rather than lifelines. Filming moved from BBC Scotland’s Pacific Quay studios to BBC One’s daytime slate in 2013, doubling the audience overnight. Between 17 January 2011 and 30 March 2015 the show ran five series and 240 episodes, with the jackpot climbing as high as £23,000 when Lynn scooped the lot on 22 October 2014 without asking the suspects for help.

Records became cult currency among viewers: Pat was first to score a clean sweep across the opening three rounds yet still leave empty-handed, while Detta’s £3,000 evaporated when she let a suspect talk her out of a correct answer. After rule tweaks capped suspect runs at eight games, Aubrey and Jane’s 16-episode streak from 2012 remains unbeatable.
