People Just Do Nothing

Mockumentary about hopeless West London pirate station Kurupt FM and its deluded crew.

Starring Allan Mustafa· Hugo Chegwin· Asim Chaudhry
Overview

Kurupt FM broadcasts UK garage from a Brentford council flat to a theoretical radius of five miles, though the transmitter usually wheezes out long before that. Self-declared legend MC Grindah fronts the operation, flanked by loyal dogsbody DJ Beats, spaced-out third deck DJ Steves, and wide-boy manager Chabuddy G, each convinced they are one banger away from global stardom. Their domestic lives intertwine with the signal: Grindah’s long-suffering partner Miche endures his tantrums, Steves crashes on sofas clutching a carrier bag of drugs, and Chabuddy sells counterfeit perfumes out of a broken camper van while promising record deals that never materialise.

The series began as YouTube sketches shot by four friends who had messed about on real pirate stations in their teens; BBC Three commissioned a Comedy Feed pilot in 2012, followed by five 6-episode runs between 2014 and 2018, plus a 2021 feature that shipped the crew to Japan. Directors let scenes breathe, allowing characters to dig themselves into ever deeper holes while an unseen interviewer watches in silence. Dialogue is largely improvised around story beats, giving every self-aggrandising monologue the raw awkwardness of actual vanity footage.

People Just Do Nothing won the 2017 BAFTA for Best Scripted Comedy and an RTS award the same year, then spawned touring club nights where the cast DJ in character, rinsing the same tinny instrumentals they peddle on-screen. Viewers need no knowledge of garage: the joke is the gap between swagger and reality, measured in skipped rent payments, broken turntables, and eight texts per show.
