Ninja Warrior UK

ITV’s British spin on the Japanese obstacle-course hit, filmed at Manchester Central.

Starring Ben Shephard· Rochelle Humes· Chris Kamara
Overview

Ben Shephard, Chris Kamara and Rochelle Humes shepherd 250-odd contestants through a four-stage assault course lifted straight from Tokyo Broadcasting System’s 1997 format Sasuke. Each episode winnows the field through quintessentially British qualifying heats—think greased monkey bars over a water hazard nicknamed “the moat”—until the survivors face the 14-metre rope climb known as Mount Midoriyama. Fewer than ten cleared Stage One across the entire run; none reached the summit.

The first five series aired annually from 2015, clocking 60-minute slots on ITV1 and drawing up to 4 million viewers for the finale. Production shifted to a single-taped “Race for Glory” tournament in 2022, rebranded to match the shorter Covid-era turnaround and filmed without spectators inside the cavernous convention centre. Commentary duties stayed with Bruce Hammal, the disembodied voice who counts down every stumble into the murky water below.

Contestants range from Royal Marines to supermarket managers, but the show’s cult resides with its repeat triers: stuntwoman Katie McDonnell, freerunner Tim Shieff and policeman-turned-firefighter Owen “the Ox” McKenzie return year after year, their bruises mapped like campaign medals. Potato, the ITV Studios label, keeps the lighting steel-blue and the score thunderous, preserving the Japanese original’s reverence for failure. The trophy is simply finishing; the prize money is zero.
