Cash-strapped Tracy Beaker (Dani Harmer) narrates her own life in the third person, just as she did in the care-home stories that made her a Children’s BBC icon. Now 32, she shares a cramped flat with ten-year-old daughter Jess (Emma Davies), juggling zero-hours cleaning work and a fledgling jewellery hustle while dodging the bailiffs. Jess, the calm foil to Tracy’s chaos, keeps their small world turning: she budgets the electricity meter, cooks pasta and quietly hopes her unreliable mum will keep the promise of “no more running.”
The three-part serial, stripped across consecutive nights in February 2021, lands its emotional punch in the gaps between Tracy’s bravado and the fear she might repeat her own mother’s desertion. Flashbacks to the Dumping Ground appear as Jess’s hand-drawn comics, letting newcomers feel the weight of history without a lecture. Sean Godfrey (Jordan Duvigneau), Tracy’s old flame and would-be sugar-daddy, swans back in a yellow sports car, flashing cash and tempting her toward the exit door she swore she’d never use again.
Scriptwriter Emma Reeves keeps Jacqueline Wilson’s spiky humour alive: Tracy mistakes a posh toddler group for a soft-play centre and sells “vintage” beaded earrings made from pound-shop curtain rings. Director Simon Vickery shoots in bright, handheld close-ups that make the estate corridors feel like home rather than a social-worker case study. The series ends with Tracy signing the lease on a seaside junk shop, setting up the sequel The Beaker Girls and proving, for once, that running away can mean running towards something.
