Overview

Phil Gallagher swaps the British studio for a battered suitcase and a 19-minute sprint through 26 cities in Mister Maker Around the World. Filmed in 2013, the single-season run lands him in Sydney’s sun-scorched back gardens, Hong Kong’s rooftop tenements, Cape Town’s townships and Rio’s favelas, where local children hand him indigenous junk—bottle-cap drums, banana-leaf stencils, ochre dust—and watch him bash it into something paint-spattered and wall-worthy before the next plane leaves.

Each episode is stitched to the same rhythm as the parent show: two ‘Creative Ideas’, a frantic ‘Make It in a Minute’, a Shape cameo pre-recorded on green screen, and a ‘Frame-It!’ montage cut from the host’s own travel snaps. The difference is the heatstroke, the visas and the cardboard coffin that supposedly protects his prized craft scissors from customs officers in six continents.

Production notes list RDF Television for the parent series, yet this passport-stamped offshoot was handled in-house by BBC Children’s Manchester, shooting on location with a three-man crew and a single translator where budgets allowed. Rights are still held by BBC Studios, but CBeebies quietly parked the format after one lap of the planet; repeats surface only when the daytime schedule needs filling and the rights to newer acquisitions have expired.
