Mission Selfie

YouTubers Ben Brown and Steve Booker race to capture the perfect travel photo in five short episodes.

Starring Ben Brown· Steve Booker
Overview

Ben Brown and Steve Booker landed on BBC Three in 2016 with a simple remit: land in a location, chase light and luck, and produce one photograph that nails the trip before the credits roll. Episodes clock in between thirteen and seventeen minutes, the pair hopping from Dubai’s glass towers to the black beaches of Iceland, Mull’s empty roads, Berlin’s graffitied ruins and the western tip of El Hierro. Each week they’re set a brief by an unseen producer, then scramble through drone shots, GoPro angles and the occasional selfie stick to bag the money shot.

The format never pretends to be anything grander than two mates with cameras and a deadline. Booker frets about colour balance while Brown vaults walls for vantage points; neither attempts local language beyond please and thank you, and both treat border officials the way most people treat baristas. BBC iPlayer dropped the whole run on 19 August 2016, where it lived quietly in the travel sidebar until the algorithm moved on.

No second series ever materialised, leaving the five instalments as a time capsule of mid-decade vlogging aesthetics: teal sky grades, royalty-free house drops, and the last gasp of BBC Three before it slipped online only. Brown went back to kayaking videos, Booker to fashion edits, and Mission Selfie survives as a footnote to the moment television started hiring YouTubers instead of the other way around.
