Keeley Hawes plays Cassandra Austen, the gatekeeper of her dead sister Jane’s reputation, in this four-part adaptation of Gill Hornby’s novel. Arriving at the Fowle household in 1830, Cassandra promises the dying Reverend Fowle she will protect his daughter Isabella, while secretly hunting for Jane’s youthful letters to his wife Elizabeth. Mary Austen, Jane’s widowed sister-in-law played by Jessica Hynes, wants the same cache to write a biography that will canonise both Jane and her own late husband. The letters, read in flickering candlelight, release flashbacks of broken engagements, lost homes and Jane’s first literary triumphs, all leading to Cassandra’s decisive bonfire on the lawn.
Director Aisling Walsh shoots the present in chill blues and the past in honeyed gold, letting the two timelines share a single house so that younger Cassandra (Synnøve Karlsen) passes older Cassandra on the stairs. The score by Dominik Scherrer keeps period strings but slips in modern discord whenever ink meets flame. Patsy Ferran’s Jane is all darting eyes and sly asides, a sharp contrast to Hawes’ contained grief; together they show sisterhood as a tug-of-war between preservation and exposure.
BBC One premiered the series on 2 February 2025, with PBS following in May. Critics praised Hawes for carrying whole episodes with little more than a tightening of the mouth; The Guardian awarded four stars and noted the pleasure of watching a woman defend a legacy by destroying it. A sequel, Miss Austen Returns, adapting Hornby’s The Elopement, entered pre-production in June 2025 with Hawes and key cast returning.
