Jeremy Vine hosted this 25-part knockout in which 100 quizzers vied for two places among the Eggheads. Each heat pitted a civilian against one of the resident quizzers, Dave Rainford, Lisa Thiel, Pat Gibson, Barry Simmons, Chris Hughes, Kevin Ashman or Judith Keppel, in five rounds of triple-choice questions drawn from nine categories. Winning a specialist round earned both a head start and the right to draft that Egghead for later consultation, so tactics mattered as much as recall. The fourth round flipped to general knowledge, still with lifelines, before a two-minute quickfire decided who progressed and who collected a commemorative pin. Four men and four women reached the semi-finals; the two grand finalists, crowned in the last week of September 2016, won cheques and lifetime bragging rights as the newest additions to Britain’s most feared quiz collective.
12 Yard produced the series for BBC Two, filming at Pacific Quay with Suzanne Pearse directing and Claire Capaldi overseeing the daily grind of tie-breaks, score disputes and Vine’s immaculate ties. Episodes ran 30 minutes in the heats, stretching to 45 for the semis and final, allowing more time for the camera to linger on contestants weighing whether to risk their hard-won head starts. The format never returned, leaving the 2016 class as the only amateurs ever to muscle their way onto the Eggheads roster.
