David Mitchell plays both John Taylor, an introverted crossword compiler who lives in a Cambridgeshire cottage, and his brother James, a DCI who vanishes without trace. In the opening minutes John swaps his slippers for police-issue shoes, his puzzle grids for a whiteboard of suspects, and a life of deliberate solitude for the chaos of a murder squad he has never met. The premise is pure farce, but the scripts treat the crime with deadpan rigour: each of the six episodes pairs a locked-room puzzle with the slow revelation of James’s hidden life. The humour comes from John’s academic literalism colliding with police shorthand. When a detective barks “Get me a list of everyone with a grudge,” John returns with a spreadsheet cross-referenced to motive intensity and probability tables.
Anna Maxwell Martin plays Lucy, James’s wife, who realises within seconds that the man in her kitchen is not her husband but keeps the secret because she needs answers more than she needs honesty. Their uneasy domestic comedy, equal parts affection and blackmail, runs parallel to the weekly whodunit and gives the show its emotional traction. Surrounding them is a squad who accept the returned DCI’s newfound love of herbal tea, Sudoku breaks and classical music as the fallout of a breakdown nobody mentions.
Shot on location in Cambridge, the series uses the city’s courts, bridges and college staircases as a giant board game, with Mitchell’s bewildered eyes doubling as the viewer’s. The first series aired weekly on BBC One from 25 September 2024 and secured a recommission before the finale credits rolled.
