Kevin Bridges: What's the Story?

Kevin Bridges dissects his own jokes in a six-part BBC One series mixing stand-up with behind-the-scenes stories.

Starring Kevin Bridges
Overview

Kevin Bridges walks BBC One viewers through the scaffolding of six signature routines, prefacing each live segment with a low-key travelogue to the Glasgow streets, family living room or student flat where the material germinated. The six half-hour films pair re-shot observational bits, already tried on arena tours, with home-video footage and pub conversations that reveal how a throwaway line about chip-shop queues or Celtic vs Rangers nerves mutates into a polished eight-minute closer.

Producers keep the tone conversational: Bridges drives his own hatchback, no voice-over intrudes and the only talking heads are his parents, schoolmates or the barman who first heard the gag. The comic’s reluctance to mythologise is the hook; he’ll show a notebook scrawl, admit it bombed in Blackpool, then cut to the refurbished version now packing Glasgow’s Hydro.

The series aired once in autumn 2012, never repeated on BBC linear channels, and survives only as low-resolution rips on YouTube and a bare-bones DVD exclusive to Bridges’s web store. Its miniature format, half documentary, half gig, prefigures the Netflix “behind-the-joke” specials by five years yet remains absent from most reference books on British comedy.
