Horrible Science

Horrible Science

Educational sketch comedy for children, based on the popular book series by Nick Arnold, which attempts to make the laws of physics and biology palatable through a mixture of slapstick, gore, and catchy songs. A frantic and frequently messy attempt to replicate the runaway success of the Horrible Histories formula. The first iteration, championed by Ben Miller, leveraged his own scientific background to ground the silliness in actual fact.

It succeeded by leaning into the grosser aspects of the natural world, correctly assuming that young audiences are far more interested in the mechanics of the digestive system or the volatility of chemical reactions when they are presented with a bit of theatrical grime. The sketches are fast paced and the tone is irreverent, successfully stripping away the dry academic layer that often stifles classroom learning. The 2025 revival continued this tradition with a fresh ensemble, maintaining the franchise’s knack for high energy parody.

While the production values are modest, the enthusiasm of the cast and the cleverness of the writing ensure it remains superior to standard Saturday morning fare. It is a noisy, colorful, and occasionally disgusting way to learn, proving that a well timed joke about bodily functions is often the best way to make a scientific principle stick. If it feels a bit derivative of its historical predecessor, it compensates with genuine charm and a brisk, engaging wit.
