Granite Harbour

Aberdeen oil boom meets murder when ex-military cop Romario Simpson trades Helmand for harbour granite.

Starring Romario Simpson· Hannah Donaldson· Dawn Steele
Overview

Romario Simpson steps off the train as Detective Constable Davis Lindo, fresh from a final Afghan tour with the Royal Military Police and still carrying the creases of his dress uniform. The granite city greets him with sideways rain and the corpse of a North Sea tycoon, giving him and plain-speaking partner Hannah Donaldson their first case inside a single shift. Co-creator Kul Mahay, a former Derby officer, wanted procedure without the gloss, so the pair chase leads through dockside container yards and empty office blocks rather than glossy waterfront penthouses.

The opening run of three episodes pulled 3.6 million viewers to BBC One in December 2022, enough for an accelerated renewal and a May 2024 second series that drops Lindo into a fishing-trawler mystery straddling Danish waters. Aberdeen itself keeps a starring role: Union Street after closing time, seagulls rattling the mortuary roof, the perpetual haar rolling in off the North Sea. Composer Matthew Hall was still in sixth-form when he scored the first season’s sparse, echoing synths, adding a teenage bleakness that matches the slate-coloured skyline.

Dawn Steele runs the MIT room as DCI Cora MacMillan, forever reminding Lindo that army rank counts for little under Scottish criminal law, while Bhav Joshi’s DI Jaiyush Mallick supplies the dry one-liners between briefings. The BBC confirmed a third batch of episodes on 25 March 2025, guaranteeing at least one more winter for the ex-soldier to decide whether ambition still points to New Scotland Yard or to the salt-stung streets he never planned to call home.
