Fresh Meat

Six mismatched Manchester freshers share a grotty off-campus house in Sam Bain and Jesse Armstrong’s campus comedy.

Starring Zawe Ashton· Charlotte Ritchie· Kimberley Nixon
Overview

The late-application misfits of Manchester Medlock University start term in a peeling Whalley Range semi after missing out on halls. Zawe Ashton’s swaggering, debt-ducking Vod rules the roost, while housemate Charlotte Ritchie’s privately-educated Oregon secretly craves her approval and a place on the student paper. Kimberley Nixon’s home-counties Josie brings bleach and a secret boyfriend; Joe Thomas’s gap-year indie kid Kingsley clings to mixtapes and ambition; Jack Whitehall’s chinless JP bankrolls the parties; and Greg McHugh’s bearded geology loner Howard patrols the attic with a thermal camera and a terror of small talk.

Channel 4 launched the single-camera sitcom in 2011, scheduling it behind Peep Show and letting Bain and Armstrong hand the writing room to emerging voices once the characters were set. Three more eight-episode series followed, filmed at The Sharp Project studio lot, before a final run in 2016 closed the undergraduate arc. Storylines tracked unpaid rent, seminar seductions, ketamine-fuelled carnivals and the slow realisation that a 2:2 in English might not open doors.

Shot in desaturated greys and set to a soundtrack of campus anthems, the show carved out its own corner of the student experience: no posh flats, no parental safety nets, just mouldy toast and the ticking clock of the overdraft.
