Anita Rani greeted the first hopefuls in 2011; by 2016 Sarah Beeny had taken the clipboard, but the rules stayed pitiless. One item, four rooms, no second chances: accept a dealer’s cash or walk to the next door and forfeit every previous bid. The dealers, among them Celia Sawyer, Raj Bisram and Jeff Salmon, sit in isolation, unable to see what rivals have tabled. Sellers choose the order of their meetings, gambling that arrogance or desperation will swell the price. A Warhol print, a dinosaur egg, a lock of Elvis’s hair: the props change, the tension never does.
Channel 4’s daytime back-room poker ran for five series and 96 hour-long episodes before the doors shut in November 2019. Early runs aired in tight eight-week bursts; later commissions ballooned to 30 episodes, the schedule stretched like the sellers’ nerves. Production shifted from Talkback Thames to Boundless after the first year, though the beige-walled set remained identical. International copies fared badly: the US version, retitled Final Offer, died after six episodes on the Discovery channel, while CBC’s Canadian take lasted only one winter. Only Germany’s RTL revamp found legs, passing 500 editions with host Sükrü Pehlivan by 2021. The British original survives in repeats, still tempting owners to risk everything for the next knock on the door.
