Excess Baggage

British dating show where contestants reveal shameful secrets to win a date.

Starring Kevin Federline
Overview

Gok Wan presides over a conveyor belt of romantic rejections in this British import of the American format. Three hopefuls arrive armed with three pieces of baggage each, literally, the suitcases contain cartoon placards that confess everything from bed-wetting to bankruptcy. One by one the prospective partner boots out whoever carries the most embarrassing revelation, then has to open their own grubby baggage in return.

Channel 4 commissioned eight episodes after a February pilot, filming at Maidstone Studios over the summer of 2012. Kevin O'Sullivan in the Daily Mirror branded the result "atrocious" and "a barrel-scraping programme that's fun for none of the family," a verdict that stuck: ratings slid from 1.1 million to 600,000 within weeks.

The show vanished after its November finale, leaving Wan to return to fashion television and contestants to unpack their secrets without a national audience. Eight episodes exist, all available on Channel 4's archive stream.
