Spencer Wright, a shy English kid at elite Beverly Beverly High, inherits a mansion from dead rock god Billy Joe Cobra and discovers the star’s extrovert ghost, invisible to everyone else, still lives in the attic. Together the pair weaponise supernatural pranks against snobs, teachers and Spencer’s social-climbing classmates while keeping Billy’s ectoplasmic career memorabilia out of the clutches of obsessive headmaster Hoover and nosy reporter Mallory. Each 11-minute caper ends with Spencer slightly more popular and Billy’s ego further inflated.
Produced by Gaumont’s Alphanim studio, the Anglo-French series blended Flash animation with horror-comedy beats pitched at 8-12-year-olds, filling the gap between The Cramp Twins and Danny Phantom. Creator Jan Van Rijsselberge gave Billy a lime-green quiff and a permanent pair of star-shaped sunglasses; Rasmus Hardiker voiced the hyperactive spook while Darren Foreman played the perpetually embarrassed Spencer. Composers Marc Tomasi and Mehdi Elmorabit supplied surf-guitar riffs that quoted Billy Joe’s fictional back-catalogue.
Disney XD UK premiered the 52-episode run on 2 February 2013, with France’s Orange Cinema Series following in March; Latin America and the Middle East picked it up by August. Despite healthy ratings, no second season materialised and the show quietly ended on 15 December 2013. The complete series resurfaced on Disney+ across Europe in 2020, where it now serves as a time capsule of early-2010s cartoon fashion and pre-streaming pop-culture references.
