Dangerfield

Explore the 90s medical drama Dangerfield, starring Nigel Le Vaillant and Nigel Havers. Trace its journey from police procedural to a more soapy drama.

Starring Nigel Le Vaillant· Amanda Redman· Lisa Faulkner
Overview

The medical drama Dangerfield followed the busy life of a police surgeon, initially focusing on Paul Dangerfield, a widower balancing his career with raising a teenage son and daughter. Following the departure of lead actor Nigel Le Vaillant in 1997, Nigel Havers stepped into the spotlight as the single Dr. Jonathan Paige.

Although Le Vaillant was a major TV star when the show debuted, the series faced its fair share of critical backlash, largely because it tried to appeal to every possible audience; it was often joked that the only thing the character didn’t do was treat sick animals! As the years went by, the show leaned further into soap-opera-style storylines and de-emphasized the gritty police work, a shift that many felt ultimately hurt the series' atmosphere.
