Colin from Accounts

Two Sydney singles collide over an injured dog and somehow end up co-parenting a neurotic beagle called Colin.

Starring Harriet Dyer· Patrick Brammall· Emma Harvie
Overview

Ashley flashes Gordon across a Sydney street, he hits a dog, and the vet bill binds them together. That meet-cute is the first of many that feel both ridiculous and painfully familiar. Harriet Dyer and real-life husband Patrick Brammall write themselves the sort of roles most actors would kill for: she a chaotic medical student, he a brewery owner still bruised by cancer treatment, both armed with punchlines that bruise as much as they balm.

The first season tracks the negotiation of shared custody of the dog they name Colin from Accounts, the second season asks whether they want each other or just the dog back. Each episode clocks in under thirty minutes, shot multi-cam but cut like a single-camera indie, letting the city’s inner-west pubs and share-house kitchens feel lived-in rather than lit. The dialogue rarely announces theme; instead a throw-away line about ethical porn or a bacon stash in a drawer reveals character history quicker than any flashback.

Critics handed the show perfect scores on Rotten Tomatoes for both seasons, and the Logies followed with three wins in 2023. Yet the real trophy is the chemistry between Dyer and Brammall, who never let the romance curdle into sentiment. When Gordon’s ex announces she is pregnant or Ashley’s mother invites a fringe academic to dinner, the stakes stay personal, the jokes stay sharp, and the dog keeps stealing scenes without ever needing to speak.
