Jane McDonald narrates this disposable 2011 Channel 4 experiment that strands five faded celebrities abroad and forces them to act as tour guides for one another. Over five half-hour episodes the group travels to Turkey, South Africa or Lanzarote, with each participant taking a turn to plan a day’s activities. At the end of that day everyone writes down who gave them the dullest ride, the loser is sent packing, and the remaining four repeat until only two remain. The locals, who have watched the chaos unfold, then pick the overall winner. The format’s single twist is that the last two think they are still voting each other off, unaware the decision has been taken out of their hands.
Series one, broadcast over five consecutive nights in January 2011, pitted astrologer Russell Grant, wild-child relic Emma Ridley, former newsreader Jan Leeming, ex-Blue singer Antony Costa and disgraced MP Derek Conway against one another in Turkey; Costa emerged as the surprise victor. A second run followed in May, dumping Stuart Baggs, Paula Hamilton, Christopher Biggins, Sheila Ferguson and Ed Giddins in South Africa, while a third set shipped James Redmond, Bianca Gascoigne, Rosie Millard, Derek Acorah and Ken Morley to Lanzarote in January 2012. Channel 4 quietly shelved the format after no one noticed it had gone.
