Bang

Welsh bilingual crime drama where a loner finds a gun and his detective sister hunts him.

Starring Catrin Stewart· Jacob Ifan· Jack Parry-Jones
Overview

Port Talbot steelworks hum in the background while Jacob Ifan's Sam Jenkins, a warehouse wallflower, fishes a pistol from a canal and begins a clumsy descent into crime. His older sister, Catrin Stewart's dogged PC Gina Jenkins, is assigned to trace the weapon, unaware it sits under her brother’s bed. Each episode switches between Welsh and English as casually as locals change pubs, reflecting the town’s split tongue.

The first eight-part run, launched on S4C in September 2017, braids two timelines: Sam’s jittery misdemeanours and a cold-case review of their father’s gangland murder two decades earlier. Jack Parry-Jones’s loyal partner Luke Lloyd and Suzanne Packer’s pragmatic Chief Inspector Davies anchor the police plot, while family kitchen scenes crackle with secrets that bilingual subtitles can’t fully translate.

A second series arrived in February 2020, widening the canvas to six episodes and introducing David Hayman’s avuncular crime boss Jeff Campbell, whose redevelopment schemes mask older scores. Dyfan Dwyfor’s DI Morgan Riley steps in as Gina’s superior, pushing her closer to the truth she dreads. Creator Roger Williams keeps the thriller local, filming inside abandoned factories and terraced streets rather than Cardiff soundstages, letting the town’s rain-slicked colours do the mood work.
