Ed Petrie fronts the BBC’s peripatetic children’s series, now in its ninth run, with a rotating squad of CBBC regulars that has included Chris Johnson, Ceallach Spellman, Richard Wisker, Johny Pitts, Barney Harwood, Naomi Wilkinson, Iain Stirling and, since 2017, Inel Tomlinson. Each 29-minute episode dispatches the team to a new British oddity: the Isle of Wight’s bat hospital, Preston’s brutalist bus station, or a Merseyside sculpture that is half-banana, half-lamb. A musical number and a viewer competition are stapled to the end of every film, turning the country into a giant playground of the gloriously pointless. The format shares DNA with the defunct Wonderful World of Weird but drops the game-show scaffolding and lets the locations do the work. Sixty-five episodes have been filmed since the first transmission on 5 February 2011, and the show is still travelling.
