A Suitable Boy

A Suitable Boy

In 1951, as India finds its footing in the wake of independence and partition, a spirited university student named Lata resists her mother's determined efforts to find her a husband. As Lata weighs the merits of three very different suitors, her family’s story intersects with the broader social and political upheavals of a nation in transition. A vibrant and ambitious adaptation of Vikram Seth’s massive novel, this production marks a significant milestone as the first BBC period drama with an all-person-of-color cast.

Director Mira Nair brings her signature eye for color and texture to the screen, creating a lush visual experience that captures the heat and bustle of post-colonial North India. The narrative attempts to condense a thousand-page book into six hours, which leads to a somewhat breathless pace that occasionally sacrifices depth for breadth. However, the central performances remain grounded.

Tanya Maniktala is a luminous presence as Lata, conveying intelligence and independence without falling into modern anachronisms. The sprawling supporting cast provides a vivid gallery of characters, though the subplots involving land reform and sectarian tension sometimes feel secondary to the romantic melodrama. It remains a handsome, sweeping epic that offers a refreshing perspective on the traditional heritage drama.
