A Kind of Spark

A Kind of Spark

In this kids series a bright, autistic teenager living in a small village becomes obsessed with the history of local witch trials. Recognizing a parallel between the historic persecution of "different" women and her own modern experiences, she begins a campaign to create a permanent memorial for the victims. A refreshing and sincere piece of children’s programming that manages to be educational without falling into the trap of being overly preachy.

Based on the novel by Elle McNicoll, the series distinguishes itself through its dual-timeline narrative, jumping between the contemporary struggles of the Darrow sisters and the perilous lives of those accused of witchcraft in the sixteenth century. The production is notable for its commitment to authentic representation, employing neurodivergent talent both in front of and behind the camera. This creates a grounded, lived-in atmosphere that treats its young protagonists with dignity and intelligence.

While primarily aimed at a younger audience, the themes of systemic prejudice and the importance of historical memory give it a weight that carries across generations. The transition from the rural landscapes of Cheshire in the first series to Northern Ireland in the second is handled with visual grace, maintaining a consistent tone of mystery and emotional honesty.
