A Kind of Living

Richard Griffiths plays a nostalgic schoolteacher stuck in the past despite new house, job and baby.

Starring Tim Healy· Richard Griffiths· Robin Bailey
Overview

Richard Griffiths stars as Trevor Beasley, a schoolteacher who treats his new house, job and infant son as inconveniences interrupting his memories of the 1960s. Central Independent Television filmed the 26 episodes in London studios between 1988 and 1990, each running exactly 30 minutes and transmitted on ITV.

Frances de la Tour appears as Trevor’s wife Carol for the first two series, disappearing before the 1990 run, while Tim Healy’s next-door neighbour Brian provides a pragmatic counterweight to Griffiths’ wistful monologues. Paul Makin’s scripts keep the action inside the suburban semi, where avocado bathroom suites and rented video recorders date the domestic skirmishes more precisely than any calendar.

The programme has never been repeated on British television nor released on any physical format, leaving only off-air recordings traded among collectors who remember Griffiths pacing the lounge in his leather slippers, insisting that everything was better before decimal currency.
