18 to Life

Two eighteen-year-old neighbours marry on a dare and discover their parents are furious, the housing market brutal, and divorce costs money.

Starring Michael Seater· Stacey Farber· Peter Keleghan
Overview

Michael Seater and Stacey Farber play Tom and Jessie, Montreal teens who marry on a whim to prove a point, then find themselves stuck in the Bellows' basement while their parents wage cold war upstairs. The show's single location becomes a pressure cooker: Tom's conservative father (Peter Keleghan) and Jessie's liberal parents (Ellen David and Alain Goulem) share a backyard fence and now, mortifyingly, grandchildren on the way. Shot in the same Notre-Dame-de-Grâce house for both seasons, the series mines bilingual jokes without subtitles, trusting viewers to catch the French insults flying between the mothers.

CBC cancelled the show after twenty-five episodes, leaving the second-season cliffhanger with Jessie accepted to McGill and Tom facing a job in Calgary, a distance that the writers had planned to stretch into a commuter marriage. The theme song, a bouncey original by Montreal band The Beatnuts, never mentions marriage once, just the city streets the characters can no longer afford to leave. Kaniehtiio Horn steals scenes as Monica, Jessie's cousin whose own wedding provides the finale they never got to broadcast.
